SAN LUIS OBISPO – On Thursday, 2 February 2023, Saint Anne Byzantine Catholic Church, 222 E. Foothill Boulevard, will celebrate the solemn feast of the Meeting of our Lord with Simeon and Anna with two special liturgies.
The feast of the Meeting of the Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ commemorates the presentation of the Lord in the Temple in Jerusalem on the fortieth day from His birth (celebrated on 25 December) and concludes the cycle of winter feasts that are sometimes called the “Feasts of Light”. These Feasts of Lights (Nativity, Theophany, and Meeting) have a common focus: the coming of the Messiah into the world, and the beginning of His work of redemption.
This feast is counted one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Church. In the Byzantine Catholic Church, it is a solemn feast-day known as Hypopante in Greek, and Sritenije in Slavonic (both words mean meeting).
Catholics of the Latin Rite call it the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or “Candlemas”.
The parish of Saint Anne will celebrate a Vigil Vesperal Divine Liturgy at 6:30pm on Wednesday, 1 February, and a Divine Liturgy (Mass) at 10am on Thursday, 2 February 2023.
