SALINAS – On Holy Tuesday, 4 April 2023, the Diocese of Monterey in California will celebrate the Mass of Chrism at the parish of Madonna del Sasso, 320 E. Laurel Drive, at 11am.
The principal celebrant of the Mass will be the Most Rev. Daniel E. Garcia, 5th Bishop of Monterey in California, with priests from around the diocese concelebrating the Mass with him.
Traditionally celebrated on the morning of Holy Thursday, the Holy See has given permission for dioceses to celebrate the Mass of Chrism earlier in Holy Week.
The Mass of Chrism “emphasizes the institution of the priesthood” and includes “a general renewal of commitment to priestly service by both the bishop and the priests” (Rev. Jovian P. Lang, OFM, Dictionary of the Liturgy (1989), p. 253). The Oil of the Sick, the Oil of Catechumens, and the Sacred Chrism are also blessed at the Mass of Chrism.
