Holy Saturday
Holy Saturday is a day of prayer and fasting, with the austerity of Lent and Holy Week reaching the point of emptiness and desolation as the Church waits at the tomb of Christ Jesus, recalling the words of the Apostle’s Creed: “He descended into hell”. On the evening of Holy Saturday, the Sacred Paschal Triduum continues with what is officially called the Easter Vigil in the Holy Night, which consists of four distinct parts: (1) the Solemn Beginning of the Vigil or Lucernarium (Latin for “service of light”), (2) the Liturgy of the Word, (3), the Baptismal Liturgy, and (4) the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord
“The Christian year reaches its supreme moments in the celebration of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word, risen indeed in our human flesh, glorified in that flesh, triumphant over the mortality of that flesh. Again and again, the liturgy resounds with the cry of ‘alleluia!’, as the people reborn through the Paschal Mystery wait in joyful hope for the day when they too will share the glory of their risen Lord” (Bishop Peter J. Elliott, Ceremonies of the Liturgical Year (2002), n. 312/ p. 155).
