BIG SUR – From Friday, 2 June through Sunday, 4 June 2023, the New Camaldoli Hermitage will sponsor the virtual Writing from Silence Retreat with Heather King.
Offered virtually via Zoom, Writing from Silence is a workshop designed to help participants explore new directions in writing and thinking. The workshop incorporates experiences of contemplative silence, communal prayer, and the wild natural beauty surrounding the New Camaldoli Hermitage.
“Trusting our own language and voice, getting in touch with our deepest desires, wounds, joys, and obsessions. What delights us? What scares us? What do we feel desperate about? What story are we dying to tell? How is the Spirit moving us?”
Heather King is a memoirist, nationwide speaker, and retreat and workshop leader. Her published works include:
- Parched (the dark years)
- Redeemed (crawling toward the light)
- Shirt of Flame (reflecting upon the spirituality of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux)
- Poor Baby (healing from abortion)
- Stripped: Culture, Cancer, and the Cloud of Unknowing (going against medical advice)
King also writes a weekly arts and culture column in Angelus News, writes a monthly column in Magnificat magazine, and blogs at Desire Lines: Arts. Divine Intoxication. Faith.
The “credo” for this weekend retreat will be Chekhov’s “If you want to work on your art, work on your life”. Participants will be using If You Want to Write: A Book About Art, Independence and Spirit by Brenda Ueland. King will share some of the writers, poets, and other artists that she has made part of her “Personal Communion of Saints”. Participants will write, journal, walk, ponder, pray, and converse: “to turn together toward the goodness, truth and beauty of words”.
