“Particular law remaining in force, the use of the Latin language is to be preserved in the Latin rites” (Second Vatican Council, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium (4 December 1963), n. 36.1).

“[S]teps should be taken so that the faithful may also be able to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass which pertain to them” (Second Vatican Council, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium (4 December 1963), n. 54).

“The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as specially suited to the Roman liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services” (Second Vatican Council, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium (4 December 1963), n. 116).

“To all those Catholic faithful who feel attached to some previous liturgical and disciplinary forms of the Latin tradition I wish to manifest my will to facilitate their ecclesial communion by means of the necessary measures to guarantee respect for their rightful aspirations. In this matter I ask for the support of the bishops and of all those engaged in the pastoral ministry in the Church… Respect must everywhere be shown for the feelings of all those who are attached to the Latin liturgical tradition, by a wide and generous application of the directives already issued some time ago by the Apostolic See for the use of The Roman Missal according to the typical edition of 1962…” (Pope St John Paul II, Apostolic Letter Ecclesia Dei (2 July 1988), n. 5c & 6c).

“As for the use of the 1962 Missal as a Forma extraordinaria of the liturgy of the Mass, I would like to draw attention to the fact that this Missal was never juridically abrogated and, consequently, in principle, was always permitted… What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful…” (Pope Benedict XVI, Letter to the Bishops on the Occasion of the Publication of the Apostolic Letter “Motu Proprio Data” Summorum Pontificum, 7 July 2007).
