California History Virtual Tours

Some popular virtual tours helping people to escape the sheltering-in-place during the COVID-19 pandemic have been to museums and National Parks.

How about making a virtual road trip to the California Missions?

Last summer marked the 250th anniversary of the founding of the first California mission at San Diego by Junípero Serra (1713-1784), so Christian Clifford, author of books and articles about Spanish-Mexican history in California, began a quest to visit all twenty-one California missions, on foot!

Having to put his pilgrimage on hold, he created a website where one can visit the places where Catholic Christianity took hold on the Pacific Coast. If you would like to follow in the footsteps of Junípero Serra, visit Clifford’s collection Images of Serra that includes portrayals from Spain, Mexico, and the United States. It is touted as the most extensive collection in one place.

His hope is that both sites can inspire during these difficult times and reassure one that the California missions will be there when we return to normalcy.
