Secular Franciscan Order

SANTA BARBARA – The Secular Franciscan Order (Ordo Franciscanus Saecularis; OFS) is the third branch of the Franciscan family, made up of Catholic men and women who strive to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ by following the example of Saint Francis of Assisi. Members make a spiritual commitment, or profession, to live according to their own Rule. Founded by Saint Francis more than 800 years ago, the Order was originally known as the Brothers and Sisters of Penance.

The Saint Louis the King Fraternity, the local chapter of the Secular Franciscan Order, meets on the first Saturday of each month at Mission Santa Barbara, 2201 Laguna Street. Gatherings begin with the Rosary, followed by Mass and the Fraternity meeting.

Those who might be called to become a Secular Franciscan enter a journey of discernment through the stages of Inquiry and Initial Formation. During this time, candidates learn what it means to live as a Franciscan and prayerfully consider whether they are called to make a permanent commitment. Initial Formation consists of three stages, culminating in a lifelong Profession marked by solemn promises.
