CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA – On Wednesday, 1 July 2026, the parish of Carmel Mission Basilica, 3080 Rio Road, will host a morning of reflection titled Practicing Peace in honor of Saint Junípero Serra, Apostle of California, whose liturgical feast is observed that day.
Beginning with coffee and a light reception at 9am in Crespi Hall, the program will explore the Christian call to be instruments of peace in the modern world. The principal speaker will be the Most Rev. Daniel T. Turley, O.S.A., Bishop Emeritus of Chulucanas, Peru, who spent decades as a missionary and bishop in Peru and was widely involved in efforts toward peaceful conflict resolution. During his ministry there, he worked alongside the future Pope Leo XIV, then Fr Robert Prevost, O.S.A.
Bishop Turley will be joined in conversation by Sister Ann Martin Phelan, O.S.F., whose Franciscan community has long embraced active nonviolence and peacemaking as a central part of its mission, and Angela Di Novella, Executive Director of Catholic Charities Diocese of Monterey, whose work focuses on serving vulnerable populations and strengthening communities throughout the Central Coast.
The morning will conclude with Mass in the Basilica at 12pm in celebration of the liturgical feast of Saint Junípero Serra.
